Cristiano Ronaldo Wins FIFA Ballon D'Or 2013


he 28-year-old Portuguese forward ended an unprecedented four-year winning streak by Lionel Messi to take home the coveted prize for the second time in his career. Messi had won the past three FIFA Ballon d'Or prizes and taken home the Ballon d'Or in 2009 before it was merged with the FIFA World Player Of The Year prize. With Messi battling injuries in 2013, Ronaldo racked up goals at a blistering pace for Real Madrid and lifted Portugal into the 2014 World Cup with an incredible performance in a playoff against Sweden. In 59 games for club and country in 2013, Ronaldo scored 69 goals. Messi finished second to Ronaldo, with Franck Ribery finishing in third place among the finalists. All three were on hand in Switzerland when Pele announced the winner. According to FIFA, 184 national team coaches, 184 national team captains and 173 media representatives voted for the 2013 Ballon d’Or. After hearing his name called by the Brazilian soccer icon, Ronaldo took the stage, where he was soon joined by his son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. With tears in his eyes and emotion in his voice, Ronaldo could not hide how much the honor meant to him.

Bayern Munich clinched UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Eden Arena in Prague on Friday. The Premier League outfit took the lead early in the first half when Fernando Torres brilliantly finished off a flowing move, but it was pegged back shortly after the break by a long-distance Franck Ribery strike. Prior to the game going to extra time, Jose Mourinho's men lost Ramires to a second bookable offense, but they were back in front when Eden Hazard's effort deceived Manuel Neuer to restore their advantage. However, a tap-in from substitute Javi Martinez at the death sent the game to penalties, where Neuer's save from Romelu Lukaku's weak effort handed Bayern the trophy.

Mumbai wins IPL 2013


Mumbai Indians finally annexed their maiden Pepsi Indian Premier Legue title upstaging a jittery Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the final here today to bring the curtains down to a tarnished sixth season of the cash-rich league. Mired in spot-fixing controversy after the arrest of owner N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, Chennai Super Kings found the 149-run target, usually an easy ask by their standard, a little too much as they finished on 125 for nine on a difficult track.

Bayern Munich Wins Champions League 2013


Robben scored a go-ahead goal in the 89th minute to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory over German rival Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night in the Champions League final, ending four years of frustration for his team in club soccer's biggest tournament. "I don't know how many times I dreamed about it," Robben said. "Everybody I spoke to before the game, I said, `Today is going to be the night and we're going to do it.' To do it in the end is an unbelievable feeling." Bayern had lost two of the last three Champions League finals.

Lionel Messi Wins Ballon D'Or in 4th time

Lionel Messi has been awarded the Ballon d'Or for the fourth successive year. The Barcelona and Argentina forward was announced as the winner of the award given to the world's best player during a ceremony in Zurich on Monday.Messi, who scored 91 goals in 2012, beat his club team-mate Andres Iniesta and Real Madrid's Ronaldo to the awards, although his near century of strikes couldn't help Barcelona to win the Spanish league title or Champions League last season. "It's a huge pleasure for me," Messi said, after accepting the trophy. "It's the third time I get this award and it's a huge honour." The 25-year-old polled 41.6% of the votes with Ronaldo taking 23.68% and Iniesta 10.91%.
